Poetry under attack

The god of London’s song
Karim Abid
I am the creator of this city
Guardian of its gardens and birds of the air
The breeze carries me on a carpet of clouds, stars and rain
I am the honeycomb in the songbird’s heart
The tops of mulberry trees
I am fondness and the perfume of young girls’ dress
The wounds, seen by no one…
***
I am the creator of this city
From between my hands, springtime clouds emerge
Atop my shoulders, children play
Daybreak laughs and the butterflies take flight
From beneath my feet, the Thames springs forth
For birds to carry it away among the stars…
I am the purple that lights the breasts of young girls
That strikes their shoulders
Before the spark of first love is struck
When the wandering moon alights, is extinguished, and alights
Beneath their flowing clothes
…..
…..
I am the creator of London
Guardian of its birds and guard of their nests
I draw the laughing children playing in a shady park
I protect their paper planes from the wind and rains
Come to me then, dear garden thieves
And hapless highwaymen
Come to this city, without malice or daggers
Come where my shadows grow longer, with innocence and little birds
Come softly now, and learn a few things:
Turn off the tap sat the end of the night
As a falling droplet, every now and then,
Might disturb asleep girl’s ribbon
A senseless whisper might muddle her dreams
For every little girl is everyone’s daughter
And every school a house of God
Lower your voices, then
And be immersed in his endless love
…..
…..
Come to my home, this land is mother of us all
Sing to the trees, so that the trees sing with us everywhere
I am your first forefather
Still young, I have prayed for thousands of years
Sorrowful and joyous, I lift my hands up to God
Astounded, immersed in his universal light
